We are past the year’s half way mark, and well into the final home stretch. And damn, what a year it’s been already. The year has been very good to newspaper and magazine publishers, in a way that they probably couldn’t have written better themselves.
Cue: Barack Hussein Obama becomes the first African American president of the USA, thereby thrusting the ‘people’s president’ of Kenyan descent as the most powerful man in the world. And one of the first issues he has to deal with is the global economic recession which threatens to cripple the global economy.
Umsholozi, Jacob Zuma ascends to the highest office in South Africa as the Republics 4th democratic president. Surgical masks of all kinds are sold out everywhere as the Swine Flu pandemic sends the world into panic. South Africa hosts a great FIFA confederations Cup, for the first time on African soil.
The King of Pop, a.k.a, the greatest entertainer of all time, Michael Jackson passes away, suddenly, under a cloud of mystery.
Throw in the usual mix of Iraq, Zimbabwe, corrupt politicians, celebrities caught in compromising positions, strikes and protest marches, HIV/AIDS, great sporting moments, exposes, gossip, rumours, hearsay and ‘swear its true’ accounts from witnesses in states of questionable sobriety, and you pretty much get the idea, right? It’s been good.
On the local, SD front, particularly on the entertainment scene, it’s been quite eventful too.
Swazi Boy entertainment finally opened their own club, after years of nomadic residency at different venues, Café De Flore, which quickly became the ‘hottest’ club in SD. In the process, leaving the management of Club Super Rock, the entertainment company’s previous residency with the unenviable task of dealing with the aftermath. An aftermath which soon earned the club the name “Super Flop’.
Meanwhile, the Big Fun crew continued to bring big fun to Tinkers, and sooner than you could say ayobaness, Manzini (where all three clubs are situated) was turned into a battlefield, with a battle for clubbers minds, hearts and, most importantly, wallets. Accusations about sabotage flew. Fingers were pointed. People spoke in hushed tones. The beef was now truly cooking. The popular Kaslam label could have racked in extra moolah, had they designed t shirts saying ‘represent your entertainment stable or night club’. So instead of representing Bremersdorp or Mbabane, it would have been Swazi Boy or Super Rock, or Tinkers or Big Fun or whatever…lol.
On the plus side, for the consumer, initially atleast, the clubs and promoters, tried to outdo each other in bringing the biggest and hottest South African dj of the moment. Within a short space of time, we were graced by the presence of the likes of Dj Fresh, Euphonik, Tira, Oskido, Zinhle , Shimza, Kent, Sbu, What What, Glen Lewis, Sox, Sndara, Ready D, Ganyani, Terence and Revolution. Some, of course, like Tira, Sbu, Zinhle and Shimza, were hosted more than once. All this, within a period of about five months, not withstanding the middle of winter.
More proof about how Swazis just love having fun. But please spare a thought for the ‘performing live’ artists, and not to mention the majority of local Swazi Dj’s. A number of local Dj’s were involuntarily forced into early retirement, due to a lack of bookings or shows, for there was a war going on outside, and the only way any party would win, seemingly, was by hosting the ‘hottest’ South African house Dj, at that particular time.
The indirect beneficiaries were , gossip columnists like Times Sundays “Seen n Heard’, who weren’t into complete overdrive…suddenly there was ‘something’ to report, every Sunday. And those who aspire to be famous for just being famous were enjoying every second of their new found or renewed fame. Eish, Swaziland, could really do with some ‘real’ celebrities, you know. Anyway, that’s just me thinking out aloud. Moving along….
What happens from here on in, is any ones guess? This, more especially since were are still headed for the peak summer season, and that crazy phase between August and November, when all local varsity students are singing; “I’m so paid”, ala Akon, armed with FNB atm cards swelling with university allowance money. Its going to be interesting to watch, once again.
But my money is on all or most of the above mentioned SA Djs returning to the country, at some point between now and December, to make us do the ‘vuma’ once more, make some good money for themselves, and sample a piece of that fine Swazi ass while at it, why not? So, as we approach the beautiful summer, do not expect anything amazing, do not expect to be blown away, do not expect any genius event concepts. We’ll just keep it simple. So, get there, drink up, get drunk, do the ‘vuma’, socialize or hook up, go home, and lets do it again next weekend.
Of course, you can expect a foam party here and there, a mini skirt party or something to that variety, and then, maybe, just maybe, one or two events that will really stick out in your mind, but as far as club events go, that’s about it. Good? Sharp…
Speaking of memorable events, there’s actually a few potential big events, coming up in quick succession, with the capacity to evoke memories and emotions, long after the events have passed. The two biggest are arguably Swazi Boys major coup in bringing US hip hop superstar, The Game, to Swaziland, Sunday 19th July at Mavuso Centre. That should be huge. This event is closely followed by the second biggest annual event in the country, the now legendary three day Bush fire festival at House on Fire from the 31st August to the 2nd of July. Yes, second biggest, after the Channel O 24 hour news years eve party. And just for good measure, especially, if the whole night club thing doest float your boat, or, like me, you find it rather redundant at times, there’s the biggest gospel concert, in the form of Joyous Celebration and guests performing at the Mavuso Centre on the 1st of August, and then, for the whole family, there’s the Simunye Fair, Trade fair and the International Air show coming up as well.
By and large, the local entertainment scene has grown in leaps and bounds, more so, if you consider events like the Bush Fire festival, the Channel O New Years eve party, the Sixties party, and those featuring international acts, like The Game. These are all events which draw a sizeable number of foreign visitors into the country, and with the 2010 FIFA World Cup, less than a year away, its critical that the local entertainment scene be a thriving one, so as to attract more foreign visitors into the country, come 2010 and beyond.
There’s still a lot of work to be done, of course. For instance, we need; more innovative club events, a variety in types of shows hosted, more events with live artists, more events proudly parading the best of Swazi artists and Djs, more family orientated events, attracting more international acts into the country, more involvement from sponsors, more brand activation activities and incentives for consumers, less biased and skewed reporting from the media, less reliance on the traditional media to promote events, more promoters (no chancers, please) or venues, to curb possible monopolies from forming, and finally, we need a decent night club and lounge in Mbabane. Please!
As we put away the boots in exchange for sandals and skinny jeans prepare to do battle with minis and sexy summer dresses, while we sip cocktails watching late sunsets, (or is that just my warped imagination running wild). Go, on…go out, look good, have fun…just make sure that whatever you do, you do it responsibly. And remember, even just a teaspoon of Sambuca can get you in trouble with the law, on your way home, potentially dampening a great a night out.
Through it all, you best believe that the Kikilikiki.com team will be there to bring you everything you might have missed or to capture those memorable nights, you so hoped wouldn’t end. We will be there….making noise…KIKILIKIKI!!
Your boy has left the building…..
